War heroine Elizabeth Choy dies at 96

SINGAPORE'S war heroine Elizabeth Choy died peacefully at home on Thursday afternoon, with her loved ones by her side.

She was suffering from pancreatic cancer.

96-year-old Mrs Choy found out about her cancer when she went to the doctor a few weeks ago as she could not eat.

Mrs Choy was jailed and tortured by Japanese soldiers for helping British prisoners of war (POWs) during the Japanese Occupation.

She was starved and subjected to electric shocks and other forms of torture for passing food, medicine and messages to British POWs.

In the 1950s, Mrs Choy also made history by becoming Singapore's first woman legislator.

She later left politics to head the Singapore School for the Visually Handicapped.

President S R Nathan in a tribute to Mrs Choy, said she was more than a war heroine.

-- ALAN LIM

"At an age where most people would have been happy to lead a quiet life of retirement, Elizabeth continued to serve our community through her concern for the disadvantaged."

" She constantly encouraged our young to value what we have and preserve the peace and harmony in our nation, " he added.

The principal of the School, Mr Koh Poh Kwang said he was shocked by the news of her death.

He said, "I know Mrs Elizabeth Choy as a very caring person she was still around. She was indeed a very wonderful and caring lady."

Her wake is held at St Andrew's Cathedral and her body will be cremated on Saturday.

Over 100 bid farewell to Elizabeth Choy

It is the first time in St Andrew's 150-year history that it has allowed a wake to be held on its premises. It made an exception as Mrs Choy was a war heroine who served both Singapore and Britain during the Japanese Occupation.

Among those who attended were Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean, British High Commissioner Alan Collins and local filmmaker Eric Khoo.

Mr Teo said Mrs Choy had always emphasised the importance of education, and also of total defence.

'She was a pillar of strength and a great inspiration to all Singaporeans,' he told reporters. 'She will always be a part of our history and our hearts.'

Mrs Choy and her husband, Mr Choy Khun Heng, were jailed, starved and tortured by Japanese soldiers for helping British prisoners of war during the Japanese Occupation.

Mrs Choy will be cremated at 4.30pm today.
