English Translation:
Ma Huaqing (right) came all the way from China to learn more about the many cultures in Singapore. The Secondary Two student of The Chinese High School takes the Malay Language as a third language in school and is very proud to have an everyday use for the language.
The 14 year-old boy who attended the launch of the Kelab Obor at Bedok View Secondary School yesterday morning scored an A1 for his examinations for the subject recently.
The examination, which tests his creativity and knowledge in the language, fills up the space for finishing sentences following the given scenario.
He hopes his effort will be paid off if he gets chosen to become a volunteer for the Olympics that will be held in Beijing in 2008. "Who knows, the language might be of a help when communicating with the people from the Embassy", he claims. "In school, I am given books in Malay Language to be made as a reference. To this extent, we still have not made use of the Berita Harian paper. To me, the Malay Language is quite easy to understand and learn as the letters and alphabets used are that of the English Language, and they are very easy to pronounce as well."
"I also hope to be able to learn this language through the Malay culture as well. Just a week ago, a friend and I were posted to Yishun Secondary School to learn more about the Malay Culture."
"I witnessed the demonstration of Silat, understood more about Malay poems and the beliefs of Malay people about the extraordinary like ghosts and also the way they consume their meals with their bare hands. I also use this technique as I'm lazy to use the tongs!" he added.
When asked about his hopes of the development of Kelab Obor which educates young reporters, Ma is still unsure about his abilities.
However, the humble student added, although his Malay language is not yet up-to standard, he wishes to write about his house in Chengdu, China
